Michael CollinsEvery parent or concerned community resident has at one time asked what can be done to stem teenage drinking, increase the trust between the Police and residents, in particular the youth, offer reassurance to elderly residents and enhance the overall communication between residents and the Police Department. In towns such as ours, social issues, safety issues, property vandalism, even unsafe speeds on our quiet secondary streets can all be addressed to a degree, some even solved, by Community Involved Policing.
Ridgefield already has an SRO officer on the job-getting to know youth and teachers, coaching soccer and attending community meetings. Why not embrace the idea of two way communication and a partnership approach on other issues? Working with the community, the Department and the Police Commission could offer new and old residents a “Get to Know Your Officer” program whereby officers meet with residents at PTAs, Homeowners Associations, Senior Groups, the Recreation Center, the Youth Groups, Daycare Parents. These forums can provide two way dialogue, reassurance and air concerns/gripes. Joint investment in problem solving is the key. Or how about a “invite an officer to dinner night” for parents of middle and high school youth?
With more exposure to the community, an open door policy and dialogue we can become pro-active about current and future issues. I believe that our Department and our town residents want the same thing-high quality of life in town, fairness and professionalism and solutions for social problems such as drugs, drinking, speeding, and yes, even traffic. Greater use of Community Involved Policing is one of the tools we can use to achieve these goals. Working on a team with the Department and Chief, the community, town leaders and residents, I believe the Police Commission can take the lead in this area. I will work to insure that it is one of the tools we embrace to address the issues of today and tomorrow if elected.
