2001 Candidates
Steve ZemoWhen the current Board of Selectmen took office in November of 1999 there wasn’t any plan in place for the construction of schools, just failed referendums. Shortly after the election we were given the request from the Board of Education for a 6th elementary school. After lots of charts, meetings and deliberations, I voted with the majority to convert the current recreation center back into the 6th elementary school and to build a new recreation center on the Town owned Route 35 property.
The Board of Selectmen were faced with the challenge of educating our constituents on the merits of this approach, coupled with the need for a comprehensive up-grade to our existing facilities to meet the demands of a growing school population. The answer created by our First Selectman and supported by myself, and fellow Selectman Manners and Yanity was “the Bundle”.
As a member of the Board of Selectmen my primary focus was to support a plan that would: meet the educational specifications given to us by the Board of Education, get passed at referendum and deliver the schools on a timely basis. The voters had their say when on December 5, 2000 they overwhelming approved the bundle approach. I’m proud to have participated in this process and proud of the leadership it represents.
Years of inaction, mismanagement, and attempts by a few to deny the real education needs of our community were swept away with a sound plan for the future. As a community we need to maintain excellence in our educational system because our children deserve it, parents expect it and because in the long run it supports our property values while keeping Ridgefield number one. If elected I will work for excellence in education.
