Michael Collins

Ridgefield is a wonderful town, with strong community relationships, schools, neighborhoods and businesses. I would like to share my 32+ years experience in police, fire, safety, traffic and emergency response with Ridgefield as a member of the Police Commission. I believe that progress and professionalism on the Commission are vital to Ridgefield’s future.

My wife Mary and our nine year old daughter, Kendall, live in Twixt Hills. Kendall attends the Scotland School, Mary is a nurse and an Organ Transplant Coordinator. We are active in St. Mary’s Church and the Twixt Hills Homeowner’s Association.

I was called to active duty from reserve and will handle security near ground zero (the World Trade Center site) for the next few weeks. We are seeing the best of America at work during this crisis. I am proud to serve.

I have over 32 years of service in the municipal workforce of the City of New York. I have seen both sides of the negotiating process, public safety, traffic, justice and community affairs in my career.

I began in 1968 in the NYC Police Department (Sergeant). In 1977 I joined the NYC Fire Department and served in active fire companies. I was a member of the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee for Mayor David Dinkins and served as a special assistant to a deputy mayor. In 1992 I became Police Director of the NYC Department of Environmental Protection Police for the upstate NYC Watershed. The Titicus watershed, which affects Ridgefield, is in this system.

I recently left government service and became the Senior Fire Safety Director for a global real estate investment and management firm.

My education includes the Army and Navy War Colleges, the NYC Fire and Police Academies and a Bachelor’s Degree from The New York Institute of Technology.

I am Navy veteran and served onboard the Aircraft Carrier Independence CVA 62 from 1969-1971. I am a commissioned Naval Officer holding the rank of Commander and am the 2nd Vice President of MANY, the Association which represents Military Officers in the National Guard.
