2001 Candidates
Joanne Murray
Joanne Murray is the choice of Ridgefield Democrats to help lead the Board of Finance to create proactive and progressive policies for our town. Joanne understands the imperatives of the town and has the background and experience to serve the needs of its citizens. Joanne’s academic credentials include an undergraduate degree in Computer Science and an M.B.A., both from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst. The University of Massachusetts elected her as a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the Honor Society for AACSB Accredited Business Programs. In addition, she has 17 years of corporate experience at one of the world’s leading computer companies in which she has held a variety of technical, financial, and management positions. Currently, she manages the Americas I/T Training Organization-- a business of approximately 300 employees that generates $200 million in revenue annually.
Five years ago, Joanne, her husband, and their family moved from upstate New York to Ridgefield. Their goal was to select an area that would be conducive to raising the family. Joanne has 3 children-a 7th, a 5th, and a 2nd grader. While searching for a home, Joanne considered many towns in both New York and Connecticut, but ultimately she selected Ridgefield for the high quality school system, the charm and ambiance of the community, the open space preservation, and the lower tax rates in Connecticut compared to New York.
Because of her strong interest in preserving these attributes of Ridgefield, Joanne began attending Board of Finance meetings. The issue of overcrowding in the schools is of utmost importance to her. She continued to attend meetings, as resolving other issues, such as space preservation, is also critical in determining the town’s future. Joanne believes that the Board of Finance must balance the short-term fiscal needs of the town with the long-term vision that has been created for the community.
