Maloney Lends Support to I-84 Improvement Planning Process

Jim Maloney June 15 -- Congressman Maloney has lent his support to the formative stages of a new state Department of Transportation endeavor to improve Interstate 84.

The massive plan, which would be undertaken over a span of approximately 10-15 years, would involve extensive renovation of I-84 from the New York border to Newtown. Plans include the addition of a lane in each direction, improvement and lengthening of onramps and exits, and the repositioning of offramps to provide better access to main roads.

Part of the funding for the project would come from the federal level, meaning DOT officials would approach the state's congressional delegation to seek the money. Considering Jim's past successes in obtaining funding for the District, including $5 million for the expansion of Route 7 in Brookfield last year, he would play a key role in the funding for this endeavor as well. For the I-84 renovation, Maloney has cited two different sources of federal funding that can be tapped: transportation improvement plan (TIP) money, and Federal Priority Project funds. This federal money would provide a solid foundation for the extensive undertaking.

Jim applauded state officials' efforts to ensure that 5th District residents are given a voice in the formation of the plan. "At these early stages of the project, suggestions and opinions from residents crucial to a successful renovation," he said. "I am happy to see that input from 5th District commuters is, and will continue to be, an integral part of the process."

Jim expressed his hope that a plan will be developed that keeps both commuters and residents in mind. "I-84 is one of the state's most vital roadways, and its capacity to handle commuters effectively is essential to both the economy and the quality of life in the 5th District," he said. "At the same time, state officials must be attuned to the concerns of residents and businesses whose properties abut the highway. I think that a balance can be struck between both sets of interests---a balance that results in a renovation project that can improve both the economy and the quality of life in the 5th District."
