Ridgefield Candidates '97
Board of EducationMary Pat Devine
September 11 Statement
The following statement was published in The Ridgefield Press on September 11, 1997:
There's nothing more important for the future of our town than the education of Ridgefield's children. It is a responsibility that should transcend politics and personalities. Unfortunately, Over the last two years, some members of the Ridgefield Board of Education have begun placing party politics and petty personal feuding over the needs of Ridgefield's children. The result has been wasted energy, wasted dollars, and all too often, a school board in gridlock.
It's time for a change. We need a new board with a spirit of collaboration, compromise and consensus, all qualities I bring to the board.
In my 15 years in Ridgefield, I have focused on community service. I was privileged to serve for five years as chair of the Ridgefield Lakes Association. I have also spent considerable time "in the trenches," in our schools as a volunteer. As a president of both the Ridgebury and Middle School PTAs, I led the fight for Ridgebury's new roof and participated in the development of the new sixth grade curriculum. I have learned that teamwork gets a job done.
The two most important priorities facing the Board of Education today are selecting a new superintendent and resolving the space and enrollment crisis. This is a critical time for the future of our town's schools. Ridgefield needs board members willing to put education over egos and move forward with these tasks.
I ask for your support and help in getting the town's school priorities back on track. The kids deserve no less.
Brought to you by the Ridgefield, Ct.
Democratic Town Committee, John Kukulka, Chairman.
