Bill Bradley Is True To His Word

February 14, 2000

To the editors of the DTC website:

When deciding which candidate truly represents the ideals of the Democratic party, I have come to the conclusion that Senator Bill Bradley is far more qualified and deserving to carry our party's banner this fall than Vice President Gore. In his highly emotional speech at the 1996 Democratic National Convention in Chicago, Al Gore told us of his sister Nancy's tragic death from lung cancer which she developed due to her cigarette additction. This supposedly fueled Al Gore's anti smoking/anti tobacco stance. However, after his sister's death in 1984, until 1990, Al Gore continued to take campaign contributions from large tobbacco companies. In effect, he was financing his campaigns with money that was used to fuel his sister's smoking habits and her subsequent death. Bill Bradley is straightforward about his views, and will not accept contributions from special interests, especially those as sinister as "big tobacco".

Al Gore also claims he is pro choice. However, during his years in Congress, between 1978 and 1984, he was known as one of the most reliable pro-life votes in the house. In fact, he got an 84% approval rating from the National Right to Life foundation. Is this the record of a man who professes to be pro-choice? It seems that Al Gore is a fair weather friend for women's rights when it comes to choice, and decided to become pro choice when it was politically popular. It would be fine if he had an honest change of opinion, but when asked what caused the change, the Vice President denied that he had ever changed his views, as he claims he was always pro choice. Bill Bradley is the one and only candidate for the Presidency who is strongly pro choice, AND ALWAYS HAS BEEN. This are only 2 examples of Al Gore's inconsistency. We need a president who will not waffle on the issues, and will remain true to his word. For this reason, I support Bill Bradley for president and will vote for him as a newly registered voter in New York state.
