Young Ridgefielder's Concern
The following letter was received October 3:
To George Kain, candidate for the Ridgefield Police Commission:
Mr. Kain- Unfortunately the Republicans do not have a web page, so I guess I will leave my suggestion for you. I am currently in college and have followed every election in Ridgefield with immense enthusiasm. I graduated from RHS in 1996 and am still in town on my breaks. What I would like to discuss with you is the blatant and serious violations of a very neglected constituency's civil rights. This would be the students of legal driving age who own their own cars. The police in this town have a very bad habit of harassing kids who drive. If you think I am making this up, ask anyone currently at RHS. Be it pullovers with no apparent reason (other than an RHS parking sticker) or having zero probable cause to search the car, the police in the town are not regarded very highly by our future town leaders.
This is the chief reason the vast majority of kids have an us vs. them attitude about the police. I myself have been vicitimized and harassed many a time by the police. By addressing this issue and showing how you sympathize with the kids being harassed you will surely pick up votes. I myself remember the Independent candidate for police commision mentioning this issue quite vaguely. Although he lost miserably, I would estimate he picked up at least 50 votes from kids who are 18, and who can only know how many from their parents (I got my mom to vote for him).
Before you cast away me as some kid who wants to speed the streets while drunk and stoned without fear of being harassed- think again. This is a very real issue with Ridgefield's youth. Try asking them.
