Jan. 7 -- Ridgefield businessman and Democratic civic leader Mark Robinson has been appointed to Connecticut's Martin Luther King, Jr. Holiday Commission. State Representative John Frey, in announcing Mr. Robinson's appointment, noted that "...Mr. Robinson's professional and personal experience will be a proven asset to the commission..." One of Mr. Robinson's achievements has been the establishment of Ridgefield's annual King Birthday ceremony. Ridgefield's Fourth Annual Martin Luther King Celebration is scheduled for 12:00 noon on Monday, Jan. 17, at the Community Center.

Governor John G. Rowland appointed Mr. Robinson to the 19-member commission due to a request by Ridgefield's Rep. John Frey. According to Connecticut state statutes, the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission is responsible for insuring that the commemoration of Dr. King's birthday is meaningful and reflective of his life, and maintaining programs and activities statewide relating to the observance of his birthday.

The state commission also works with the federal Martin Luther King Jr. Commission, community organizations and municipalities in the state and reports to the governor annually on Sept. 1 with their findings, conclusions, and recommendations for the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday in January.

"Mr. Robinson will bring to this commission a keen interest and commitment in honoring the late Martin Luther King, Jr. I am confident that Mr. Robinson's professional and personal experience will be a proven asset to the commission and I congratulate him for earning this appointment to the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission," said Rep. Frey.

Mr. Robinson, a former managing director of the advertising agency Spike/DDB, is the founder, president and CEO of MSSR Corporation - a Ridgefield-based company and member of the "Made in Connecticut Guild." The MSSR Corporation celebrates the heroes and accomplishments of African American history with its Heritage Apparel and Heritage Mint divisions. Through high-value, high-quality products, Mr. Robinson's company raises awareness and appreciation of African American history and heritage among all Americans.

Mr. Robinson is a three-term member of the Ridgefield Democratic Town Committee, and was a key player in the recent successful election campaign of First Selectman Rudy Marconi. He also serves as chairman of the local community group, ROUND, which has hosted the Martin Luther King Day ceremnony in Ridgefield for the past four years.

I look forward to serving my community and the state of Connecticut in this important and extremely fulfillling role," said Mr. Robinson.

Members of the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday Commission serve without compensation and meet as often as the commission chairperson or a majority of the members deem necessary.
