Ridgefield, CT: On the porch of the Ridgefield Community Center at noon on MONDAY, JANUARY 17TH, Ridgefielders will have the opportunity to commemorate the life and the contributions of Martin Luther King, Jr., the civil rights activist and preacher who made de-segregation, equal rights and community-building his life's work.
Sponsored by the Ridgefield Diversity Committee and Ridgefield ROUND, the ceremony will feature local clergy, members of the community, youth and Ridgefield's newly-elected First Selectman, Rudy Marconi. Mr. Marconi will deliver the keynote address.
"This annual commemoration of the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is a chance for us all to take stock of the many ways which we can continue his work," spoke Susan D. Cocco, Chairman of the Ridgefield Diversity Committee. "I see many opportunities in our town, our schools and our families to work together to promote understanding, respect and acceptance of differences."
Now in its fourth year, the annual Martin Luther King ceremony continues to grow in community acceptance and attendance. According to Mark Robinson, Chairman of Ridgefielders Organized for Understanding and Diversity (ROUND)< "The Martin Luther King Day ceremony is a chance to re-affirm our public and private commitments to diversity and equal rights. I urge all Ridgefielders who are enjoying Dr. King's Federal Holiday on Monday, to attend with their families."
Mr. Robinson, one of the organizers of the annual event, was recently appointed by Governor Rowland to a State Commission charged with the responsibility for developing appropriate observances and programs surrounding the work and the life of Dr. King.
