Mar. 7 -- Ridgefielders showed their independent streak today, as locally both Democrats and Republicans supported their parties' insurgent candidates - the Democrats, former Sen. Bill Bradley, and the Republicans, Sen. John McCain. Coincidentally both challengers garnered 56% of their respective party's votes - a clear majority - while Sen. Bradley was losing not only the statewide Connecticut race, but apparently all the "Super Tuesday" primaries nationally. On the Republican side, it appeared that statewide Sen. McCain edged out Gov. George Bush.
Turnout for today's Presidential primary was brisk, with almost 4,000 Democrats and Republicans coming out to vote. 30% of registered Democrats voted, while 43% of registered Republicans came out to vote in their closely-watched primary race between Gov. George W. Bush and Sen. John McCain. Former Amb. Alan Keyes, whose fiery rhetoric has electrifed the debates this political season, continued to draw very few actual votes, garnering the support of just 72 Ridgefield Republican voters - or 3% of the total.
A footnote to today's primary is that, since there was no primary contest for either the Ridgefield Democratic Town Committee race, or the Republican Town Committee race, the results of the caucuses are now final. The new Town Comittees for the 2000-2002 term begin their terms tomorrow.
