McCain Visits Ridgefield; "Penance Tour" Or "Campaign 2004"...?
Apr. 8 -- Sen. John McCain, defeated for the Republican presidential nomination by Gov. George Bush, visited Ridgefield today. McCain, who carried Ridgefield in the Republican primary by a wide margin, is touring the country supporting Republican candidates in what some have termed a "penance tour." Based on the sentiment seen today in Ridgefield, however, it would appear that Sen. McCain is getting an early start campaigning for the 2004 presidential race. In a "Town Meeting" Q & A session, a young Ridgefielder evoked thunderous applause when he asked, "Senator, would you please run for President in 2004, because George Bush is a ROBOT!" McCain, chastened by the Bush machine in the primaries, opined that Gov. Bush is really a pretty nice fellow. [Photo, left: Sen. McCain addresses Ridgefielders in the Yanity Gym. His popular second wife, Cindy, is in the green dress behind him. Right: Sen. McCain signs autographs in front of the Rec. Center. The sign expresses support for McCain, but "No" support for Nielsen, one of the local GOP candidates appearing with Sen. McCain.]
