| Cong. Jim Maloney (standing, center) on one of his frequent visits to Ridgefield. Here, he joins DTC Chair Jim Diamond (standing, right) in greeting townspeople during the July Sale-A-Bration on Main St. |
In his announcement today, Maloney made five stops across the district in Bethel, Waterbury, Meriden, Shelton and Weston. Committing to two more years of hard work that produces real results for Fifth District families, Congressman Maloney standing with his wife Mary, their three daughters Adele, Anna and Ellen, and surrounded by supporters, announced that he is running for re-election in Connecticut's Fifth District.
"My only purpose in Congress is to serve the families of the Fifth District. This job is not about being seen on the Washington television talk shows. It's about getting up every morning and finding ways to make a real difference for each person and family in this District." said Maloney.
In his announcement speech, Congressman Maloney described two examples of important ways he has made a difference for families in the Fifth District.
When the Napier plant in Meriden was taken over last year, over 300 employees, many of whom had worked at the company their entire adult lives, were given 20 minutes to leave the building. As if losing their jobs was not devastating enough, by Christmas time their former employer decided to eliminate their benefits. But Congressman Maloney did not let that happen.
"The minute I found out that the Napier employees were on the verge of losing their benefits because the company shut its doors and moved out of the country, I went to work and succeeded in getting them extended unemployment and health care benefits---as well as funds for retraining so they would have the opportunity for new, good-paying jobs," Maloney said.
Congressman Maloney has also come to the aid of thousands of women in the district who face breast cancer. Every three minutes in this country a women is diagnosed with breast cancer and one in every nine women will face this terrible disease during her lifetime. Congressman Maloney and his family have had a personal experience with this disease.
"When my younger sister was diagnosed with breast cancer, it highlighted for me the need for improvements in women's health care. While my sister is now in remission, far too many women still receive inadequate treatment for breast cancer and other curable diseases. That's not good enough – we need to fight and defeat this disease," said Maloney.
Congressman Maloney secured $175 million in funding for breast cancer research and is one of a select few members of Congress nationwide to receive a 100% rating from the National Breast Cancer Coalition. Maloney continues to fight for a "Patients' Bill of Rights" which requires insurance companies to allow women direct access to their OB/GYN providers.
Congressman Maloney has always put the needs of the families of the Fifth District ahead of party politics. He was the only Connecticut Democrat to vote for the Taxpayer Relief Act, the Balanced Budget Amendment, and elimination of the marriage penalty tax. He also signed the "no new taxes" pledge.
"I have consistently put families first by working for family tax relief," said Maloney. "For example, I am working to make sure that every 5th District family can afford to send their children to college – that's why I'm fighting to pass a $10,000 per-year per-child tax deduction so parents don't go broke trying to give their children a better future."
One of Maloney's top priorities has and will continue to be improving health care. He has been a tireless promoter of protecting Social Security and Medicare. He has fought to ensure that our seniors can afford the prescription drugs they need to live. And, he was one of only five Democrats that put party politics aside and voted for the prescription drug bill recently approved by the House of Representatives.
"With Jim Maloney, what you see is what you get. I'm a hard-working guy who calls it like I see it and works to get things done. I look forward to continuing to serve the people in the Fifth District, to improve the quality of life for all of our families and neighbors," concluded Maloney.
