July 31 -- The Ridgefield Democratic Town Committee announced their Golf Challenge event honoring the First Selectman, Rudy Marconi today . The public is invited to participate in the annual event with the First Selectman. Scheduled for September 11th at 11AM at the Salem Golf Club in North Salem, NY, attendees will enjoy a full day of golf and dinner under the stars.

Jim Diamond, DTC Chairman, explained the concept of the Golf Challenge. "When Rudy Marconi attended Ridgefield High School, he was a star athlete -- football, baseball and more. Now that age and the responsibilities of office have caught up with him, he's given up the gridiron in favor of golf. As First Selectman and the Town's unofficial 'First Golfer,' what better way to have him prove his mettle, than to toss him a different sort of sporting challenge."

The Golf Challenge event will include a full day of golf, dinner, a roast of the First Selectman and numerous prizes. Non-golfers may join the festivities for a casual dinner on the Salem Club's patio. Prizes and awards are planned for tournament winners in many categories, recognizing the good golfers, the lucky golfers and the golfers who should take up fishing. After the awards are presented, a short roast of the First Selectman will top off the evening.

The par-72 Salem Club is thirty years old and was built on an old apple orchard. With a slope rating of 133, the terrain is moderately rugged and the ancient trees and landscaping offer players breath-taking vistas. The club house is a late Victorian mansion made of fieldstone and wood. It's nestled into the crest of a hill and surrounded by trees from the Civil War. The exterior is maintained in its original condition, while there is also a modern restaurant and locker rooms.

The outing will feature a shotgun start about 1 p.m. using a modified "scramble" format. The driving range and putting green will open at 11:00 a.m., and there will be a buffet lunch for the golfers from 11:45 a.m. to 12:45. The expected 130 Ridgefielders and their friends will wrap up their games about five hours later. "You don't have to be a low-handicap golfer to enjoy this golf course," noted Dr.Henry Seemann, Ridgefield dentist and Chairman of the Golf Challenge. "The scramble format is a great equalizer. From the great golfers to the merely enthusiastic, a scramble allows everybody to contribute to their team's effort."

The event is open to the public. Tickets are available from any member of the Democratic Town Committee, noted at, www.ridgefielddems.org, or call Dr. Henry Seeman at 431-0940 or Mike Jones at 438-0005. Positions and sponsorships can also be arranged by calling the above. The full day event is $150 which includes the greens fees, cart fees, balls for the driving range, lunch and dinner. For non-golfers, the dinner only is $40. A few sponsorships for the individual holes remain available.
