Board Of Education Rejects Republican Town Committee Choice, Elects Mary Miller

Sept. 18 -- Rejecting the Republican Town Committee's endorsed candidate, the Ridgefield Board of Education tonight selected Mary Miller to succeed to the seat previously held by Republican Richard Terbrusch. The school board rejected the RTC's nominee, attorney Elisabeth Maurer, by a vote of 7-1. Mary Miller, a former Democrat who switched her party registration about a year ago, was supported by all three Democrats on the board and by three of the four Republicans.

In nominating Ms. Miller, Democratic board member Bob Opotzner said, "Mary Miller is one of the most qualified candidates to ever present herself to the BOE for election. She will be an asset to the BOE." While the RTC has engaged in much-publicized efforts to "reinvent" itself since the stunning Democratic rout in the November 1999 municipal election, the GOP committee appears increasingly marginalized by events in town. Democratic school board member Kitty Fischer said of Mary Miller, "It is wonderful to have a new Board member who knows so much about the workings of our school system, its space crisis and the proposed building projects. Mary will be an asset to the BOE."
