Nov. 14 -- First Selectman Rudy Marconi (photo, left) once again went to Ridgefielders tonight, to urge passage of his omnibus school building "bundle" proposal. In an information forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters, the Democratic First Selectman continued his campaign to end the serious overcrowding in the town's school system. He was joined at tonight's event by Supt. of Schools Ralph Wallace and other town officials. Marconi explained the impact on property taxes by offering his own tax situation as an example. Displaying a chart showing the property taxes on his house projected over the next 10 years, Marconi explained that his taxes would increase an average of 4.8% a year over that period, with bigger increases in the next few years - 14.2%, or $678 for Mr. Marconi in 2001 - due to the start of school construction. He also explained that most of the increase over 10 years would be due to the normal inflation in the costs of running the town and its school system; the mill rate, which is now about 23, would be about 32 in 2011 without the school construction, and about 34.5 with it. About 50 townspeople attended tonight's information forum, one of a number of events at which Marconi has been appearing to educate voters on the need for passage of the school building referendum, tentatively scheduled for Dec. 5.
