More than 13,000 Ridgefielders turned out to vote in Election 2000. Despite early predictions of voter apathy and low turnout, nearly 80% of voting-age residents voted in this year's historic election. This is a higher proportion than have turned out in recent years, although we didn't review voting records prior to 1994. [Anyone have any earlier records?] Are the stories about how high voter turnout was "in the good old days" the same as our parents' tales about trudging 5 miles to school in 4 feet of snow --- amazing, amusing, but more than somewhat exaggerated?
As this graph, specially prepared by www.ridgefielddems.org, shows, Ridgefield's turnout was not only its highest in recent years, but markedly higher than the turnout statewide and nationwide. The 2000 story was the same for the state and the nation, however, as the amazingly close contest between Gore and Bush generated the highest turnout in the last 4 elections. We'll have more Facts & Figures from Election 2000 in the days ahead. Check back often!
