"Inaugurals" In Ridgefield

While we can't match the Presidential Inaugural for glitz, pomp, and circumstance, Ridgefield has had its own swearing-in ceremonies to kick off the new year. On January 2, Cindy Bruno took the oath for her first full term as Democratic Registrar of Voters. Cindy had been serving as Registrar since the retirement of her predecessor, Pat Baker, last year. As is traditional, in the November election she ran unopposed for the Democratic Registrar position. While her race was somewhat overshadowed by the Gore-Bush and Maloney-Mielsen contests, Cindy won in a landslide!

Just before Christmas, several dozen Ridgefielders were sworn in as Justices of the Peace. The largely honorary office, which dates back to Connecticut's colonial days, is today empowered to conduct marriages and administer oaths. The positions are based on political party. There are about 40 Democratic JP's, including First Selectman Rudy Marconi, other officeholders, DTC members, and other Democratic activists and volunteers. Town Clerk Barbara Serfillipi held a group swearing in ceremony in Town Hall in December, where she explained the background and powers of the JP position, and had each JP sign the register to effectuate their taking office for the new four-year term.
