Record Turnout Marks Annual Town And Budget Meeting

Budgets, Bennett's Pond Issues Go To Referendum May 15

Ridgefielders crowded the new Playhouse for tonight's Town and Budget meeting. Both the orchestra section and balcony were virtually filled, with standees at the rear.

May 7 -- More than 400 people, a modern-day record, turned out for tonight's Annual Town and Budget Meeting. The meeting was held in the recently-opened Ridgefield Playhouse, the first muncipal event to take place in the beautiful new facility. The Board of The Playhouse hosted an open house prior to the meeting, and many Ridgefielders took advantage of the opportunity to get their first look at the latest addition to the town's cultural scene. At the Town Meeting, residents heard First Selectman Rudy Marconi, Finance Board Chair Bernie Dzielinski, and School Superintendent Ralph Wallace explain the budgets for the upcoming fiscal year. Many then took advantage of a quesion-and-answer opportunity to grill town officals on everything from the stationing of a police officer in the high school to the condition of the town's paved roads. Tonight was also the continuation of the Apr. 25 Special Town meeting on Bennett's Pond. Tonight's Meeting voted to send all budget items, and the two advisory questions on the Town takeover of Bennett's Pond, to town-wide referendum on Tuesday, May 15.
