Sept. 13, 2001 -- The Ridgefield Democratic Town Committee voted unanimously to endorse a “Yes” vote on the September 25 town referendum concerning Bennett’s Pond. Approval of the resolution would direct the town to appropriate $11.6 million for acquisition of the Bennett’s Pond property by negotiated purchase or eminent domain.
“The DTC has voiced its strong support for an approach that is the best way to preserve open space and protect the small town character of Ridgefield,” said Susan Cocco, DTC chair. First Selectman Rudy Marconi led the effort to put the Bennett’s Pond proposal before the voters. The Board of Selectman voted 4 to 1 for a referendum, and the Board of Finance followed suit. Ridgefielders attending the September 12 town meeting also voted to recommend a referendum on Bennett’s Pond.
The resolution calls for the town to appropriate $8.7 million for the acquisition of the 458-acre northern parcel of the Bennett’s Pond land for open space. $2.9 million would be designated for acquisition of the 155-acre southern parcel for corporate, municipal or other purposes.
In voting unanimously to endorse the resolution, DTC members noted that approval of the proposal could lead to an investment by the State of Connecticut. The Connecticut Department of Environmental Protection has promised to put $5 million toward incorporation of a portion of the Bennett’s Pond property into the state parks system.
The DTC also supports a “Yes” vote on the resolution because, by providing for careful development on the southern portion of the land, the plan can generate tax revenues that can help cover the costs of acquisition. “It’s a balanced approach, one that benefits all of us by preserving pristine open space, and at the same time allowing for development that will help Ridgefielders with their tax bills,” says Cocco. She urges all voters to be heard and cast their ballots on September 25.
