Referendum Passes In Landslide
More Than 2/3 Of Ridgefielders Support Town Acquisition Of Property

Sept. 25 -- The Bennett's Pond referendum has passed by an overwhelming margin tonight. By a vote of 3102 to 1379 (final, official returns), nearly 70% of the voters have directed the town to acquire the largest remaining open space in northern Fairfield County. The total vote of nearly 4,500 appears to be a record for any recent townwide referendum.

Jones, as a Ridgefield Selectman, was the first elected official to advocate a town takeover of the Bennett's Pond property. The apprehensive expression seen here changed to a huge smile as the landslide proportion of tonight's victory became clear.

Marconi had made protection of the Bennett's Pond site one of the major issues of his first term. Tonight's vote demonstrated how successful he has been in bringing the town together with a solution endorsed better than 2-to-1 by Ridgefielders. ROSA has worked tirelessly for two years to preserve the major part of the Bennett's Pond property for open space. Rep. John Frey was a major ally in the effort, working to secure up to $5M in potential state funding to support the Town's effort, and to rally public support for tonight's measure.
