Nov. 6 -- Ridgefield today strongly endorsed the policies and direction set by First Selectman Rudy Marconi. Voters reelected Marconi along with Democratic Selectmen Barbara Manners and Steve Zemo, who have been strong supporters of Marconi's education, open space, and open government initiatives. In addition, Republican Peter Yanity, who has been supportive of Marconi's policies, was reelected. Joseph Heyman, who has opposed the Democratic team on important issues, was ousted from the Board. Joining the Board will also be Republican Joan Plock.

Democratic P&Z Commissioners Di Masters and Nelson Gelfman were reelected, as was school board incumbent Mary Pat Devine. In other races, Democratic challengers for the Boards of Finance and Education, Police Commission, and ZBA made strong showings but failed to overcome the advantage of Ridgefield's heavily Republican registration.

Democratic Headquarters at Copps Hill (photo, above left) was a busy place throughout Election Day as campaign workers and candidates coordinated last minute campaign duties. Teams of poll monitors phoned returns from the voting districts to Headquarters, where they were tallied and posted on the Internet. Diane Schrier Throughout the day, candidates and volunteers unleashed last-minute efforts to turn out supporters. Today was a crisp Fall day for Election 2001. Early morning voting was brisk at all three polling places. Candidates were out in the chilly breeze for their last chance to meet the voters. Democratic school board incumbent Mary Pat Devine (above, left) listened to a strongly-held point from a voter in front of East Ridge, where campaign signs (right) lined the driveway. Democrat Diane Schrier, candidate for the 2-year term on the Board of Education, was also at East Ridge early today.
