Jan. 22 -- In its last scheduled meeting, the School Site Selection Committee prepared its final report to the Board of Selectmen. In one of its shortest and most harmonious meetings, members essentially "marked up" a draft report prepared by Gary Holland.
(Left, committee members study Gary Holland's draft report: from l., Di Masters, Pete Jaehnig, chairman Steve Zemo, Becky Mucchetti, Joe Savino)
Tonight's discussion centered primarily around the actual wording of the report, as members strove to insure that Ridgefielders would have a clear and complete record of their investigation and deliberation. It was evident to observers that, at this point, most substantive debate among committee members was over, and a unified committee was making a strong recommendation favoring the Ippoliti property for the new Lower Middle School.
The Committee appears to have met Chairman Steve Zemo's goal of an in-depth study of the myriad of possible sites, and a fast-paced, although comprehensive, exploration, discussion and debate about each site which showed merit. Given their comprehensive charge from the Selectmen, and the requirement for a final report in January, the scope and pace of the Committee's accomplishment is monumental. Also remarkable is the degree of unanimity finally reached by the 13 members. In the short 17 days from the first meeting to the last, a group of extremely diverse Ridgefielders, with widely varying and strongly held views, coalesced around a nearly unanimous recommendation.
What now remains to be seen is whether the elected officials and citizens of Ridgefield will accept the committee's reasoning, and its conclusions. Stay tuned!!
