Oct. 3 -- Nearly 300 townspeople came out tonight to learn about the threat to Ridgefield posed by a potential casino. First Selectman Rudy Marconi (photo, left) hosted the event at East Ridge Middle School, and introduced several speakers with first-hand knowledge of what a large casino can do to the economy and lifestyle of a small Connecticut town: (photo, left, seated at table from the right) Wes Johnson, Mayor of Ledyard; Nick Mullane, First Selectman of N. Stonington; and Bob Congdon, Preston First Selectman. They described the adverse effect of the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods casinos on their towns' traffic, crime, economy, and overall quality of life. Also speaking was Jeff Benedict, author of Without Reservation, a book chronicling the dysfunctional Federal tribal recognition process. The facts they gave reinforced most attendees' resolve to resist the potential of a casino coming to this area.
