| Dr. Wallace (seated, right) is congratulated by (from left) schools' curriculum czar Michael Hibbert and school board members Bob Opotzner, Frank D'Angelo, and Linda Bunyan. |
Wallace came to Ridgefield in 1998 from Cheshire, CT., where he had been a figure of some controversy. See our story. He arrived here with a self-proclaimed goal of turning an "excellent school system" into one of "educational preeminence." [www.ridgefielddems.org published a lengthy interview with Dr. Wallace shortly after he was appointed. Read it here] Tonight he told the school board that Ridgefield' schools have prgressed from being a "very good" system to one that is "Connecticut's best." He said it would be an honor to conclude his almost-40 years in education in Ridgefield. Citing the significant challenges for the school system int he currentyear, he added that he wanted to give the Board of Education a full year to conduct the search for a new Superintendent. The inital controversy surrounding Wallace's appointment seemed to be in the distant past tonight, as the entire school board and the several dozen people in attendance rose and gave Dr. Wallace a standing ovation at the conclusion of his annoucnement.
