June 26 -- Ridgefielders have rejected the proposed compromise settlement over the Bennetts Pond property. The referendum was defeated by a 62% to 38% margin, with less than 20% of voters turning out to voice their opinion. The compromise settlement, recommended unanimously by the Board of Selectmen, would have ended the lawsuits over the Town's efforts to control the future of the large parcels at the north end of town. First Selectman Rudy Marconi said, "This is a clear mandate from the people. Now it's time to move forward with the litigation." He continued, "All elected officials should take note: the people have voted to continue fighting the lawsuits, with the costs that entails."
