| About 400 Ridgefielders filled The Playhouse to hear the final debate of the 2003 campaign |
Veteran broadcast journalist Morton Dean was the official moderator of the debate, which included a series of prepared questions as well as questions solicited from the evening’s audience.
Both candidates were emphatic and dramatic in their presentations. But while First Selectman Rudy Marconi spoke convincingly of his accomplishments in office and his vision for the future of the town, challenger Heiser seemed to be reading from a prepared script of familiar sound bites and clichés about taxes and runaway government spending.
Rudy Marconi is well known for possessing an almost encyclopedic command of facts and figures relating to the town, and this skill was on display at the debate as he answered each question with calm authority. Alternatively, candidate Heiser appeared to vamp and stall for time after several questions by making small talk with his opponent until he could think of a response.
At the end of the evening, First Selectman Marconi urged the audience to vote on November 4th no matter their choice, and to make sure their family, friends and neighbors vote as well.
