Joint Resolution of the Republican and Democratic Town Committees Urges Passage of Referendum on Land Purchase

Mike Jones reads resolutionMar. 16 -- In a first in Ridgefield politics, the Republican Town Committee joined with the Democratic Town Commitee to pass a joint resolution urging townspeople to vote FOR the upcoming referendum on the purchase of the Ippoliti site for the purpose of building a new school. The letter, the joint idea of Democratic Selectman Mike Jones and Republican First Selectman Abe Morelli, was drafted and read to both Town Commitees Monday night. Both Committees suggested some minor modifications, and the final wording was passed within an hour. (Photo - Mike Jones reads proposed text to DTC meeting)

Marconi, Morelli, Jones, Leonard shake on agreement(Photo: DTC Chairman Rudy Marconi, First Selectman Abe Morelli, Democratic Selectman Mike Jones, and RTC Chairman Chris Leonard cement their agreement on the Joint Letter.) The quick agreement of two bodies which normally agree on absoutely nothing indicates the urgency many townspeople feel about getting a school site secured so work can quickly get under way to solve the very difficult overcrowding, which promises to get even worse in the next few years.

Text of the Joint Letter:

A Joint Letter Of Recommendation From

The Ridgefield Democratic Town Committee and

The Ridgefield Republican Town Committee

To the Editor of The Ridgefield Press:

After extensive debate both public and private, we, the members of both the Republican Town Committee and the Democratic Town Committee, have voted to jointly support the purchase of the Ippoliti property on Danbury Road.

This recommendation is the result of each Town Committee considering in depth both this recommendation and the reasonable alternatives. While we appreciate the concern about the acquisition casts, both Committees in formal vote agreed that this site is the best available site for the new school. They reached this position by considering that this site best satisfies a11 of the important criteria:

In addition, we concluded that while each of the other possible locations had some attractive characteristics, none had a reasonable chance of producing an equivalent school at substantially lower total cost or in a substantiality shorter time.

Therefore, by vote of the members of the respective Committees, each Committee has instructed its chairperson to sign this letter of support and jointly urge our neighbors and friends to vote in favor of this resolution at the referendum on March 2lst.
