School Budget Defeated; Town Budget Passes Handily

May 11 -- Ridgefield voters tonight rejected the proposed $61 million school budget, by a margin of 58% opposed to 42% in favor. The Town budget, totalling nearly $39 million, passed by a 56%-44% margin. It was the first time in recent memory that voters had rejected a school budget at referendum. The turnout was 31%, compared to almost 33% in 2003. In capital funding questions, Question 5, authorizing $582,000 for various recreation projects and equipment, was defeated. Question 4, $840,000 for various town building projects and improvements, passed by a very narrow margin; a recount will probably be required. The other capital project questions passed.
