Meriden, July 13, 9:08 pm -- Moments ago, Democrats from across the Fifth District of Connecticut renominated Cong. Jim Maloney by acclamation tonight. Maloney, who made national news by unseating Republican Gary Franks two years ago, has established an outstanding record for a freshman representative. The word on the street at the convention is that Maloney is being eyed by national Democrats for "bigger things" following what most expect to be his successful run for a second term.

There were three nominating speeches. Lew Wallace, Danbury's representative to Hartford, cited the Congressman as "Jim Maloney, standing with us in the district, standing for us in Washington; Jim Maloney, the best congressman in the country." There also were two nominating speeches, the details of which will be on-line tomorrow.
At the convention, Maloney was supported by his three daughters and his very gracious wife. Maloney made a special effort to visit with the Ridgefield Democrats and was gratified by their support.
Mr. Maloney brought his family, including his three daughters, to the convention.
Rudy Marconi, DTC Chair, who led Ridgefield's delegation to the Fifth District Convention, congratulated Maloney on his success. "Jim has been an oustanding U.S. Representative and a terrific advocate for Connecticut and the Fifth Congressional District," Rudy noted. "Jim also is a great friend of Ridgefield who knows and values the support he's received from Ridgefielders over the past two years."
Dave Nichols also attended the convention. "We're pleased he's going for a second term," Dave noted, "and as Ridgefielders we look forward to making a major contribution to his reelection."
