The 1998 elections produced a major victory for Democratic candidates and principles, in what will be remembered as one of the most defining off-year elections of the Twentieth Century. Local Democratic leaders were delighted with the results, as our Congressional delegation was returned to office and Democrats swept the state underticket. Ridgefield Democrats were especially pleased to help our Congressman, Rep. Jim Maloney, win reelection. Jim's seat had been targeted by Newt Gingrich and the national GOP as one of their top 10 "winback" opportunities, and they spared no expense with a largely negative campaign against Jim. It was also gratifying to help Sen. Chris Dodd send Gary Franks back to the showers, with a strong majority for our popular veteran senator, even in heavily Republican Ridgefield. This was our second big drubbing of Mr. Franks, as we also helped Jim Maloney throw him out of the Fifth District House seat in '96.
