Whereas these acts included but were not limited to the smashing of mailboxes, the spray painting of graffiti on cars parked in private driveways and the theft of personal property from cars, and

Whereas at least one of these acts of vandalism may also have constituted a hate crime in that words of hate were spray painted on private property, and such act under the laws of the State of Ct. would constitute a felony, and

Whereas we, the Board of Selectmen oppose any manifestation of hatred and prejudice towards any group or individual, and further

Whereas we the Board of Selectmen are cognizant of the especial emotional and psychological impact which hate crimes have on their victim and the victim's community and of the poison such crimes spread throughout society,

Now therefore, be it resolved, that we, the Board of Selectmen, in fulfillment of our responsibility for the general supervision of "the affairs of the town", hereby strongly support the Ridgefield Police in their efforts to apprehend the perpetrators of these crimes.

be it further Resolved that the Board of Selectmen encourages the residents of our town to assist in the apprehension and prosecution of the perpetrators of these and other acts of vandalism and we urge them to contact the police (438-6531), so that they and all our citizens know that we deem such acts to be an offense not only against the individual but against our entire community; that we as a Board and as a community will not tolerate such unlawful and abhorrent behaviour.
