Republican Selectmen Refuse To Allow Discussion of Development Plans For IBM Land

ROSA members regroup after Selectmen meeting Feb. 10 -- Republicans on the Board of Selectmen refused to allow discussion of the proposed development of the former IBM site at tonight's meeting. Democratic Selectman Mike Jones had secured First Selectman Abe Morelli's agreement earlier in the week to add the discussion item to the agenda, but Morelli claimed "technical problems" prevented the item from being published. Republican Selectmen Joe Savino and Peter Yanity used this as a reason to veto any public review of the issue tonight. About twenty members of the Ridgefield Open Space Assoc. (ROSA), who had come to tonight's meeting to hear a review of the issue, left the meeting when it was clear that Selectmen would not allow discussion to proceed. Tom Mullen, ROSA spokesman, said, "We're disappointed that we didn't get a chance for public airing of this important issue tonight. We came with the expectation that this item would be on the agenda; we're puzzled why it's not." Mullen added, "We look forward to a full airing of this issue with the Selectmen and other Town bodies in the weeks ahead."
