Ridgefield's Fifth Annual Diversity Fair
By Priscilla Morrissey, Diversity Festival Committee
On Sunday, March 21st, a visit to the Yanity Gym in Ridgefield will be like taking a trip around the world! That's because its time for the Fifth Annual Ridgefield Diversity Fair cosponsored by Ridgefield Parks and Recreation and the Ridgefield Clergy Association. The fair takes place from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and all of the activities and entertainment are free.
The Ridgefield Diversity Fair celebrates our ethnic, cultural and religious diversity via music, performance, dance, crafts, and foods. Sample the food and culture at booths from over fifteen countries such as Columbia, Germany, the Philippines, Israel, Greece, Japan and Mexico. The fair will also host an afternoon of entertainment from a variety of troupes and performers. Returning this year is the adorable Chinese Children's Dance Group and the guitar strumming Rabbi Jon Haddon singing Israeli folk songs.
New this year is Phrepecha Danzantes, a mesmerizing Mexican Dance Troupe, and performance artist Rainbow Star with interpretive Native American Dance. The Sounds of Afrika will also bring their interactive high-energy performance to the gym. The kids will love the karate demonstration by Jim Kirby's Soo Bahk Do Karate of Ridgefield Park and Recreation. And if karate is not your thing, there's always the tango!
In addition to the booths and performances, many Ridgefield restaurants will offer a sampling of their menus. Enjoy delicious treats by Venice, Lotus, Rancho Allegra, and Dimetri's. Plus popcorn, face painting and crafts! It's all wonderful fun for the entire family and it's free.
The Diversity Festival Fair is just one of the events being celebrated in Ridgefield in March, Diversity Month, sponsored by the Ridgefield Diversity Committee. Middle school children are participating in the program "Think Twice, Talk Nice" which demonstrates the harmful effects of labeling and name calling. For the little ones there's storytelling at Saint Mary's Parish Hall on Saturday, March 20th from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. Other events include a concert by the Sounds of Afrika at St. Stephens Church on March 14th at 4:00 p.m., and an ecumenical Passover Seder at Temple Shearith Israel on March 25th at 7:00 p.m.
For more information regarding any of these events, please call Susan D. Cocco at (203) 431-4161 or Lynn Harakel at (203) 431-0766.
