Apr. 8 -- The Ridgefield Board of Education voted 8-1 tonight to solve the K-5 school crowding by building a sixth new elementary school. The board rejected the alternative of building significant additions to the existing schools. However, it appears that, even with a brand new school, some expansion of existing schools will still be necessary. The new school will have about 24 classrooms.
Democratic board members Mary Pat Devine, Kitty Fischer, and Bob Opotzner were joined by Republicans Linda Bunyan, John Armato, Frank D'Angelo, Doug Orr, and Maureen Kozlark in choosing to build a new school. Republican Glen Cordelli was the sole vote against building the new school.
Ridgefield will now be faced with the daunting prospect of selecting politically and fiscally acceptable sites for two new schools, as the Board recently voted to build a new 6-8 middle school to alleviate severe overcrowding in those grades.
