Town, School Budgets Approved By Voters

All 11 Measures Pass Handily

Witnessing election returns
Politcally active Ridgefielders joined town officials at East Ridge Middle School tonight as referendum results were tallied. Here, First Selectman Abe Morelli (standing, left) joins Democratic activist Rob Miller and daughter Kate (standing, right) in tracking the count.

May 15 -- Ridgefield voters solidly supported the proposed Town and School budgets for 1999-2000. All 11 ballot measures were approved by the voters today, with strong majorities for all key items. The major town and education budgets passed by 65%-70% margins, with the proposal to purchase Great Pond approved 4-to-1.

Sign about time limit
The presence of 11 questions on today's ballot led election officials to post signs alerting taxpayers to the 2-minute rule. Turnout was light enough that there were no reports of lengthy wait times on a beautiful spring day.

Town officials were pleased with the result, but disappointed that turnout was very low. Less than 20% of registered voters participated in today's annual budget referendum. There seemed to be far less controversy over this year's budget proposals than in recent years. Notably, voices of the traditional nay-sayers to all town spending seemed muted during the weeks that led up to today's vote. This was reflected in the low turnout at the May 3 Annual Town and Budget Meeting and in today's referendum vote.
