RIDGEFIELD DEMOCRATS HONOR MARY GELFMAN, FOR OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTIONS TO THE TOWN AND THE DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Ridgefield, Ct -- Mary Gelfman, a long standing community activist and member of the Democratic Town Committee of Ridgefield, was recently honored by the Democratic Party of Ridgefield for her eight years of service. She is leaving the Democratic Town Committee of Ridgefield to pursue her career as Special Education Hearing Officer for the State of Connecticut, to write and to enjoy her grandchildren.

Attorney Gelfman began her life in politics when Adlai Stevenson was running for President. She attended the National Convention as a college student and found that she became hooked on politics. She has expressed this interest in many ways including a stint as a member of the Ridgefield Board of Education, from 1969-1980 where she was an advocate for the schools.

Her history as an involved citizen includes National, State and Local elections. Recently, she specialized in the "ins and outs" of Election Law and Campaign Finance, acting as a resource to candidates and the Democratic Party on these often complex and confusing regulations.

She is a passionate advocate of women in politics and has been a strong force within the Democratic Party for bringing women into the political process. Her involvement in politics, as she expresses it began simply, as " what every good citizen should do—be involved in town, be active and participate in democracy". She has stated many times that finding the people who can do the job and who can also get elected is the most difficult part of the political process.

Attorney Gelfman is a Special Education Hearing Officer for the State of Connecticut. She travels Statewide in this capacity. She is published on the topic of Educational Records and is currently working on a Resource Guide for covering Legal Issues in School Health Services for use by School Nurses, Administrators and Attorneys.

Mary is a 30+ year resident of Ridgefield where she and her husband, Nelson Gelfman, make their home. The three Gelfman children, now grown, are graduates of the Ridgefield School System. They include a Marine Biologist and potter; a novelist and a sculptor. Two grandchildren complete the Gelfman clan.

Mary's departure from the Ridgefield Democratic Town Committee will be filled by the Party this Spring. Anyone with an interest in becoming a member of the Democratic Town Committee should contact Rudy Marconi, Chair, at 431-0752.
