June 13 -- Noted actor and playwright Harvey Fierstein urged Ridgefielders to learn to communicate better with their gay and lesbian friends at today's Third Annual Gay Pride celebration. Fierstein was the featured speaker at the event, which included Ridgefielders of all sexual, political, racial, and ideological persuasions. Noting that "I hardly ever speak to heterosexuals these days," Mr. Fierstein welcomed those particpants who in the past, "were afraid to stand here, on Main Street. This is what it feels like!" he exulted. The actor also disclosed that he is producing a made-for-TV film based in Ridgefield. [photo, right: Harvey Fierstein speaks at Gay Pride festivities. More than 50 people attended today's event; many active in local diversity movements were joined by "just plain folks," - singles, couples, parents with kids, friends, and friends of friends.
Dave Goldenberg played a new song he had written for today's event - "Shades of Gray." Dave called it a "90's protest song;" he used ROUND president Mark Robinson (left) for his "human music stand."
Democrat Phil Lewis, organizer and emcee of today's event, and a staffer to Democratic Congressman Jim Maloney, read greetings from Rep. Maloney to the crowd.
Aimee Kovac, a Ridgefield High School senior and member of the dramatic group Inside/Out Players, read her own composition.
Daniella Sikora of the Ridgefield Chorale played several selections to entertain the crowd.
Dave Goldenberg created this rainbow symbol for today's event.
