In a surprising turn-around from previous public statements, Republican Abe Morelli conceded that the idea of a conveyance tax as a means of funding the purchase of valuable open space in Ridgefield – an idea first presented by Democratic challenger Rudy Marconi – is "probably a good idea".
At the candidate debates held on Sunday afternoon at Temple Sheareth on Peaceable Street in Ridgefield, Republican Abe Morelli acknowledged that the idea of a conveyance tax might not be so bad after all. While fellow Republican Selectmen Peter Yanity and Steve Zemo looked on, Abe Morelli conceded that "Maybe 1% isn't the right amount. Maybe 1/4 % is right." This dramatic reversal by the Republicans comes after numerous public statements (including a mailing to Ridgefield voters) condemning and shunning the idea.
Democratic challenger Rudy Marconi first proposed the idea of considering a conveyance tax on home sales as one way to help fund the purchase of valuable open space in Ridgefield, such as the Bennetts Pond property, during the ROSA debates a few weeks ago. The idea was presented as a need for creative thinking by Ridgefield leadership, not necessarily a definitive solution. But Mr. Morelli immediately dismissed the idea. After hearing from numerous voters on the subject, however, Mr. Morelli and fellow Republicans apparently have been forced to rethink their original opposition.
Whether 1% or 1/4 %, Democratic candidate Rudy Marconi was pleased that "at last they've opened their minds to some new ideas," as he told the crowd gathered at Temple Sheareth. "What matters is that people are finally thinking about solutions to Ridgefield's important issues." The Sunday debate was one of the last opportunities for voters to meet the candidates and hear their positions prior to casting their ballot this Tuesday on election day.
The Democratic Town Committee hopes that all Ridgefield voters will come out on Tuesday to vote and participate in our local democratic process.
