Nov. 20 -- As Tuesday's historic runoff election for Selectman nears, candidates Mike Jones and Joseph Heyman are making the rounds, greeting voters at the train station, at Steve's Bagels, in front of stores and at every imaginable public place in town. Both candidates, Democrats and friends, emphasize that this runoff is a choice between two outstanding people - each is quick to praise the other, although each is clearing campaigning to win.
The runoff election is the result of the tie vote the two received in the Nov. 2 municipal election, in which Democrats swept the Board of Selectmen. Democrat Rudy Marconi defeated incumbent Republican Abe Morelli in a 63% landslide, and Democratic candidates Barbara Manners, Mike Jones, and Joseph Heyman all outpolled the two Republicans, Peter Yanity and Steve Zemo.

Under state law, however, only three Democrats can sit on the Board of Selectmen, so Heyman and Jones cannot both be seated - only one can join the Board. Their tie vote in the initial tabulation triggered a recount, which was held Nov. 8. In the recount, the men remained tied for the third Democratic slot on the Board of Selectmen. Thus the runoff election, to be held Tuesday, Nov. 23. Voting will take place from 6 AM to 8 PM, and all three polling places will be used. Both candidates stressed that all registered voters can participate in the runoff - some voters think that only Democrats can vote - and urged everyone to particpate in this historic runoff election.
