Dec. 10 -- www.ridgefielddems.org, the web site of the Ridgefield Democratic Town Committee, has received the Liberty Award from Politics1.com. The Liberty Award is presented "…to recognize political parties, candidates, campaigns, interest groups, news organizations and other electronic information provider sites that use the Internet in an effort to promote voter education and increased citizen participation in the electoral process," according to Politics1.com.

Ridgefield Democratic Town Committee Chairman Rudy Marconi said, "We're pleased to receive this national recognition. The goal of our web site is to inform and educate the voters of Ridgefield about the political issues and news that are important to us all." Marconi was recently elected First Selectman in a historic 63% landslide. He added, "while many factors went into our electoral sweep in the Nov. 2 election, our web site clearly played a key role as an important source of information about our candidates, the issues, and where we plan to lead the Town in the future."

www.ridgefielddems.org, which was launched in 1997, has quickly become one of the most popular Internet destinations for Ridgefielders. Webmaster Dave Nichols, who also serves as Recording Secretary for the Democratic Town Committee, notes, "in just over two years, the web site has had more than 80,000 unique user sessions, or individual user visits. In November, when we had up-to-the-minute coverage of both the municipal election and the closely-watched runoff, we had 7,500 user visits." Nichols added, "Normally, the site receives over 30,000 hits a month, but in November we got 62,000, which is remarkable given that our focus is on local Ridgefield news and events."

Ridgefield Democrats have also led the state party in exploiting the Internet to inform and educate voters. "The Ridgefield Democratic team has helped numerous other towns across Connecticut get started on the Web," says Stuart Smith of Wilton, Communications Chairman of the Ct. Democratic State Central Committee. "Ridgefield Democrats also led our pioneering Internet coverage at the 1998 State Nominating Convention in Hartford. Our live, gavel-to-gavel web coverage of the convention was a first in the nation."
