The following statement was released by Bob Opotzner and published in The Ridgefield Press on October 2, 1997:

The school board recently began the process of selecting our new superintendent of schools. The selection of a superintendent who best fills the needs of Ridgefield is one of the most important decisions that a school board member will make. The new superintendent will lead Ridgefield through the resolution of many important issues which face our school system today.

Although the members of the school board will ultimately have the responsibility of selecting the new superintendent, I believe that it is imperative that at least three members of the community at large be allowed to participate in the selection process. At a recent meeting, I made this recommendation to our consultant and the other board members.

I have found in my prior experiences in selecting a superintendent, community involvement was extremely helpful. I look forward to tapping the resources of our civic minded residents. I am hopeful of convincing the other board members to allow community involvement in the selection process.

Community involvement in our school system can only serve to improve the quality of education in Ridgefield. The Ridgefield school system serves the needs of the entire community. We as board members must learn to better utilize the resources available from our residents.

I urge all Ridgefield residents to attend at least one school board meeting before the election.
