Voters Are Exasperated
The following statement was released by Bob Opotzner and published in The Ridgefield Press on October 23, 1997:
During my recent discussions with Ridgefield residents, I am gratified with the response I have received to the substantive positions I have discussed in this newspaper and elsewhere. The message is loud and clear from the voters that they are exasperated with the behavior of the Ridgefield school board.
I have received many accolades about the positive impact I have had on the School Board since my Aug. 11, 1997 election. I have been praised by many for my willingness in my very first meeting to break the three-meeting board deadlock over the selection of a board chairman by casting the deciding vote for chairman Linda Bunyan. Many board observers have stated that new Chairman Bunyan and I have provided a new spirit and attitude on the board that will hopefully lead to the board regaining respect of the community as it deals with the crises that face Ridgefield.
My ability to work with board members should surprise no one as indicated by recent comments from Ridgefield board member Kitty Fischer that my nine years of experience on Shelton's School Board ... "enabled Bob to bring perspective, insight, and wisdom to the Board as well as a strong belief in respectful, appropriate board relations."
These comments mirror those of former Shelton board member Paula Ellis. "Although Bob and I disagreed occasionally, Bob was always respectful of my opinions and worked hard to build consensus." I can and will provide positive leadership to the School Board upon my November election.
